In this lecture, Jones provides insight into an ecological journey of a decade-long search for sustainable design strategies. The course focuses on how mass timber can be used as a lower-carbon approach to building design while also maintaining the safety and well-being of the occupants. The presentation depicts several case studies that demonstrate the architect’s lessons learned which enabled more sustainable building design opportunities in the future. Lastly, the course discusses the process of changing regulations within the United States for the use of mass timber in a variety of buildings, particularly Type 4c, Type 4b, and Type 4a construction.

By the end of the course, you will be able to do the following:

• Discover several case studies where sustainable projects were designed but unable to be built due to client challenges, design flaw, or economic impact.
• Assess the process used to determine how mass timber could be integrated more feasibly into projects that were successfully built.
• Explore how mass timber became accepted as law in 2019 by the ICC as a material of choice for Type 4c, Type 4b, and Type 4a buildings.
• Examine the use of mass timber (specifically CLT) in a variety of projects designed for aesthetic benefit, occupancy comfort, and building safety of the occupants.
